NOVEL CORONAVIRUS AND COVID-19 DISEASE
New York State and Westchester County registered recently cases of COVID-19 disease.
It has been determined that the COVID-19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus is spread through droplets, and it is not an airborne infection. This means that coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces are ways to transmit the infection.
Patients shed high amounts of virus especially during the first 2 days of disease and they can infect their close contacts.
SARS-CoV-2 virus survives on surfaces approximately 9 hours. Disinfecting surfaces, good hand washing and social isolation are effective ways to prevent the spread of infection.
Most of the patients experience flu like symptoms and the only treatment available at this time is supportive. Symptoms such as high fever or shortness of breath are indicators that the infection can be severe and hospitalization may be required.
Testing is provided by, and coordinated through NYSDOH.
Please inform us on any respiratory symptoms prior to your visit. This will ensure an appropriate triage of our patients.
We offer online Telemedicine appointments when office visits are not possible.

Dr Popescu,
Thank you for this email. I was not aware that they have determined that this virus is not an airborne infection.
I would like you to outline what I should be specifically be doing to stay healthy.
Thank you in advance for you help.
Best,
Maureen
I was about to address this question.
The infection spreads via close contact. The virus enters the airways through droplets from coughing or sneezing, and via unwashed hands that came in contact with freshly contaminated surfaces. It is helpful if the infected person wears a mask, because this would decrease the potential for contamination. Those in close contact with the infected person or taking care of them should wear face masks, gloves, and protective garments, especially if the patient is sneezing and coughing a lot.
Vitamin C in high doses, good hydration and plenty of rest are always helpful for both: patients and caregivers.
I hope this helps,
Dr. Popescu
